From Whence Springs True Joy?

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Matthew 22:37-40

Are you happy? Do you feel fulfilled? Do you feel restless or ready for “the next best thing.”?

We need to examine our hearts in search of discontentment in disguise. Many times we make excuses for, and don’t recognize this SIN behind it’s guise of “loneliness” and/or “restlessness”. This restlessness does not spring forth from a lack of what we need. We condition ourselves to think that we will be happy and find true joy and fulfillment by whatever is “Just around the corner.” “ If only I was in that church…” “If only I had those friends…” “If only I had that job…” “If only I was (or wasn’t) married to so-and-so…” the list could go on. The loneliness or restlessness that is felt, will not be quenched in a new church, or with different people to have relationships with, etc….

We are discontent because of our own neglect of duty or our disobedience to God! We are not seeking the Lord with our whole hearts, we are not encouraging, loving and caring for the brothers and sisters in our own church body, we are not reverencing our husbands, loving our wives, honouring our parents, serving our masters, etc.

We get so busy trying to find the “latest greatest” that we totally miss the fulfillment and joy that is right in front of our eyeballs! While out looking for “the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow”, we forfeit the precious jewels to be had on our doorstep!

If you want to be happy, if you want peace, if you want contentment, then love the Lord and fulfill His commandments! The joy that springs forth from contentment will be yours, if you invest your time and effort in the Lord and the people that He has placed you with, both at home and in the Church.

May the Lord strengthen us all to do His pleasure and to be content with whatsoever state we are in. Oh Lord, make me to go in Thy way! For only therein is found the peace and comfort of true joy!

  1. Wise words of wisdom ~ but so hard to follow sometimes in this world. The world tries to lure us to discontent, coveting, restlessness. Thanks for the reminder to continually keep our focus on the Lord, His will, and His way for our lives.

  2. Thank you! Yes indeed! We must press on in faith, striving for perfection in, and conformity to, Christ! He was the most content man ever, content even with His Father's plan to kill Him for us! See you in a very short time, Lord willing. ~Brytni
