~Trammels to Prayer~

The LORD has given us the directive to pray, and He even gave us instructions on how, when and what to pray. But, He also warns us of some hindrances to prayer. Here I will name 7 of those to think about.
1. Selfish purposes will rob our prayers of power:

“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”
James 4:3

2. Sin hinders prayer, therefore we must repent!

“Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
Isaiah 59:1,2

3. Idols in our hearts can cause a deaf ear to be turned toward our prayers.

“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?”
Ezekiel 14:3
4. Stinginess, or the lack of generosity trammels prayer.

“Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.”
Proverbs 21:13

5. An unforgiving spirit will stop up God’s ears against our prayers.

“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
Mark 11:25

6. Bad relations between husbands and wives can hamper one’s prayers.

“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”
1 Peter 3:7

7. A heart of unbelief will hobble our prayers.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.”
James 1:5-7

May the LORD help us to examine our hearts, to see if there is any wicked way in us and may He lead us in the way everlasting!
God be merciful to me a sinner

  1. It makes so much sense that our prayers would be hindered or not heard if we are not in fellowship with God in the rest of our life. And there is not one thing here that I have not needed to repent of. I love reading my Bible- but praying every day as a discipline is something I need to work on in 2013.

Number six always amazes me- that is just how much God cares about wives and husbands properly loving each other, that anything else hinders their prayers.

  2. Amen! It's not just you, everyone has to repent and press forward toward the mark harder than ever! Thank you for sharing! LORD help us all to do and be better Christians in 2013! Thank you again for your comment!

  3. Hi Brytni!
Thanks for your post. I really enjoy lists like this, of things found throughout the Bible that God saw fit to mention, even if it's just in passing. Little phrases here and there are often the most convicting to me. Thanks for the time you put into your posts. The LORD sees all the effort, but He sees your spirit too. We all do. Keep your heart's focus on Him!
    Love you much,
    Esther :)

  4. Hi Esther!
Thank you for your comment! You are welcome and may the LORD be glorified! Amen! I too love each of the promises and warnings that the LORD so graciously gives us! We don't walk about in the dark, but His light of truth shines brightly into the dark recesses of our hearts to convict us and cause us to walk more and more in conformity to Christ! You are so sweet sister! May the LORD bless you for your kind and gracious words! He sees your heart of encouragement and love for the saints, and He has promised many blessings for those who give a cup of cold water in His name. Thank you!
Love you ever and ever so much too!

I'd love to hear from you! Thank you for the time you take to read!
