The LORD has allowed me/us to live at this time and in this place and I want to take advantage of the history we have. We can read about the martyrs who have shed their blood in faith knowing that it was not in vain but that the LORD sees, and hears, and will avenge their blood. They are a great cloud of witnesses that watch us every day…
We who are not called to die for Christ, must…MUST… live for Him! There are those who are great examples of living for Him too, we can read about them in history and hopefully we have some living examples in our lives too for which we can be grateful.
I enjoy collecting quotes from people in the past who acknowledge the LORD and His Word as important and declare His faithfulness if we but follow His truth found therein.
Here are a few quotes and verses that I have in my collection:
"I have read it through many times. I now make a practice of going through it once a year. It is a book of all others for lawyers as well as divines. I pity the man who cannot find in it a rich supply of thought and rules of conduct. If there is anything in my thoughts or style to commend, the credit is due to my parents for instilling in me an early love of the Scriptures. If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity."
"Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good."
“… God has entrusted you with many talents, such as health… a good understanding, memory…; and if any one be misemployed or not improved, they will certainly, one day, rise up in judgment against you."
Susanna Wesley to her son Samuel Jr.
(this makes me think of Ecc 9:10 & 1 Corinthians 10:31)
“ Think of heaven, talk of heaven; all the time is lost when we are not thinking of heaven.”
~Samuel Wesley~ upon his death bed, addressed to his family
"...This is what happens to most of us. We seek God's will for our lives, but even as we seek it our inward compass is deflected by our own desires."
"If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."
“"I say to my wife, and to my children, The Lord gave you unto me, and the Lord hath taken me from you, and you from me: blessed be the name of the Lord! I believe that they are blessed which die in the Lord. God careth for sparrows, and for the hairs of our heads. I have ever found Him more faithful and favorable, than is any father or husband. Trust ye therefore in Him by the means of our dear Savior Christ's merits: believe, love, fear, and obey Him: pray to Him, for He hath promised to help. Count me not dead, for I shall certainly live, and never die. I go before, and you shall follow after, to our long home."
Rowland Taylor of Hadly a Martyr of our Lord Jesus Christ
May we have so great faith that even as He died trusting the LORD we might live.
